TWA Pilot George: The Unsung Hero of 9/11

Introduction

On the morning of September 11, 2001, TWA pilot George took off from New York's JFK airport with 142 passengers and crew on board. Just minutes later, he learned that two other planes had been hijacked and crashed into the World Trade Center towers.

Realizing that his plane was also in danger, George took evasive action to avoid colliding with the hijacked planes. He first turned the plane sharply to the left, narrowly missing United Flight 175 as it crashed into the South Tower. He then turned the plane sharply to the right, avoiding United Flight 93, which crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.
